ISLAMIC INTEGRATED LESSON PLAN

ASCEND SCIENCE LESSON PLANS

Topic - Soil

Age group - 7-8 years old

Assalamu alaikum wrwb

Dear Parents and Educators,

Giving the right education to children is every parent and teacher's responsibility and to attain right education is a child's right too.

A right education is one which is holistic. Such an education can only come from a balanced approach where the creator of the creation is equally mentioned.

Most of the schools focus a great deal on enquiry based learning, critical thinking, but do not stress on the source of all this knowledge and the creator of all the creation that is being learnt as part of the curriculum.

We at 'Ascend' want children to connect with their creator whenever they learn about His creation.

We will be posting sample lesson plans which can be used by parents and teachers as well.

We also make customised lesson plan based on your school's textbooks.

The head of Ascend is trained in Islamic integrated teaching and has provided teaching plans to hundreds of teachers.

Following is a sample lesson plan which is created for a particular school. More lesson plans will be shared if required.

Jazak Allahu khair

Topic: What is soil, uses of soil

Session No: 1

Duration: 30 mins

Teacher:

Date:

Students’ strength:

Resources:

Cordova video

Learning Objectives

To be able to

  • Describe soil

  • List the uses of soil

Main teaching

14 mins

Greet the children warmly.

Make them recite the dua - ‘Rabbi Zidni Ilma’

Remind them the class rules.

Tell the class that today we will be starting a new chapter.

Tell them that you will give them hints and they have to guess the name of the chapter.

It is the top most layer of the earth. It is the layer on which we walk. Plants grow in it. Roots of plants get water and minerals from it. Small animals like insects and earthworms live in it. What is it?

It is soil. Allah [SWT] has covered the earth with soil, without which the growth of plants and many other things would not have been possible.

In the coming sessions, we will learn about soil and its uses.

Explain that soil is a special blessing of Allah in many ways which we don’t tend to pay attention to.

Ask children if they can think of the uses of soil.

After taking the answers and commending them on their participation, tell the children let us look in detail at the uses Allah swt has placed in soil.

  1. All plants grow in soil: soil contains water and minerals that plants need for their growth. Without soil, plants have no space to grow properly. And if there were no plants, we would have no food!

  2. Soil is home to many animals: Ants, snails, earthworms and many other animals live in soil. Earthworms are very useful for farmers. Earthworms dig tunnels in the soil and loosen it. They add humus to the soil and make the soil fertile. This soil is good for growing plants. So, they are often called the ‘farmer’s friends’.

  3. Inside the soil Allah [swt] has hidden many treasures like metals [iron, copper], gold, silver, diamond, coal, water, petroleum etc.

  4. Also, when we die we will be placed back into the soil in our graves.

Students’ Activity

14 mins

Show a video on soil. (Around 5 minutes video)

As you go through the video, ask the students inferential questions and explain where required.

Discuss the video with the students. This will help them in their future sessions.

Conclusion

2 mins

Ask the class;

  1. Why is soil important?

  2. Which of the following lives in soil? (rabbit/lion/tiger)

  3. __________are called farmer’s friends. (ants/earthworms)

Topic: Types of soil

Session No: 5

Duration: 30 mins

Teacher:

Date:

Students’ strength:

Resources:

Sample of different types of soils (loamy, clayey and sandy), textbook

Learning Objectives

To be To be able to identify different types of soils and list their characteristics

Main teaching

14 mins

Greet the children warmly.

Make them recite the dua - ‘Rabbi Zidni Ilma’

Remind them the class rules.

Ask the children, do all humans look the same? Do all animals look the same? Do all trees look the same? Allah swt has blessed us with variety in whatever He created. There is nothing in His creation that is of only one style or type. Allah has created millions and trillions of things and again in each creation, He created variety.

Similarly, even in the creation of soil, Allah swt has given variety. He has created different types of soil.

Show the children the different types of soil samples. Explain that soils differ in colour, particle size and amount of air and water. There are three types of soils – sandy, clayey and loamy.

  1. Clayey soil

It contains mostly clay. It consists of soil particle of very small size. It is smooth and sticky. It is used by potters to make pots and toys. Clayey soil is not good for plants because there are no spaces between its particles to hold air. But it can hold a lot of water because water cannot pass through the particles easily.

  1. Sandy soil

It mainly consists of sand. There is a lot of air in the spaces between its large particles. But it cannot hold much water because water can easily pass through these spaces. So, very few plants are able to grow in sandy soil. It is mostly found on seashore and in desserts.

  1. Loamy soil

It contains both sand and clay particles. It contains a lot of humus and can hold both air and water. Therefore, it is very good for growing plants.

Students’ Activity

14 mins

Discuss the MCQs given on page number 30 & 31 and let children write the answers in their books.

Also make children complete the rest of the objective questions from the activity corner.

(Train the children to find the answer from the textbook. This will enhance their researching skills)

Conclusion

2 mins

Tell the class that this session brings us to the end of the chapter.

From now on whenever we look at soil, we should praise Allah swt and remember of all the important components He has placed in it for the growth of plants.
